Ate a wonderful cod dinner in the hotel restaurant. Entertainment is limited but the remoteness of the location is enchanting. It is the furthermost settled and occupied area in Iceland's Westfjords. Good waking, sightseeing and hiking opportunities.
A small, very ordinary Westfjords town, and a great place to stay after visiting the Latrabarg bird cliffs, especially if, like us, you plan to fly out of Bildidalur the next day. For a place to stay going to the Latrabarg bird cliffs, i suggest the Latrabarg Hotel, which is opposite Patrecksfjordur across the fjord.
The great hamlet of the Westfjords is directly connected with nature and a wonderful community. When the occassional cruise ship drops its passangers ashore, I was inspired to tell them they should 'jump ship' and go for a real adventure but I suppose different ways of doing things is what makes the world go round. A wonderful place to explore and to explore from.
Isafjördur is an absolutely awesome place for kayaking (Borea Adventures!), hiking and biking trips, and offers a lot of possibilites to venture into the wild and explore the westfjords. The seafood you get in town is absolutely delicious too, especially in Tjöruhusid. People are very friendly. If you are an outdoor person, I'd recommend staying at least 4-5 days!
I was in Isafjörđur for 3 weeks taking a fantastic course in the Icelandic language at the University Center of the Westfjords. I did very low key activities ouside school. Hang out at the pool/ sauna. Walk around town. Take photos of this very photogenic town... saga recital in neighboring town, bird cliffs at Lautraburg...
Isafjordur is an attractive town with old houses, good services (including grocery stores and bakeries), a really good museum, and good restaurants. It is a good base for exploring this part of the Westfjords. I wish I had planned a longer stay.
The main town in the Westfjords region, Isafjordur has some good bars and restaurants. It is surprisingly cosmopolitan given the remote region, and the setting is spectacular, with preserved old fishing buildings next to the working harbour and framed by towering green mountains. Plenty of tours run into the mountains and by boat from here so it is a good base, and if you are passing through it is a good place to stock up on home comforts.
Dragsnes is a nice little town on the edge of the Westfjords. It is very peaceful and in a very scenic location. The best feature of the town are the seaside Hot Pots. There are 3 free 24/7 natural hot tubs right at the ocean with a great view. It's not to be missed!
Small island in westfjords. Sheep are everywhere. It's very quiet and small so one night there is enough, but it's very restful
Best spot to stay if you plan on visiting the Westfjords to see the puffins at Latrabjarg.
Overall the stay was amazing. We can’t recommend enough to visit Hólmavík and stay at Finna Hotel over the winter time. Perfect stay to split up the drive from Reykjavík to the Westfjords. First off the staff was super friendly and flexible, check in took no time at all. The room was really cosy. The view was amazing, easy to heat up or cool down the room. The bed was really comfortable and it was so nice to be able to make yourself a nice warm cup of coffee in the morning (or tea in the evening) and watch the sun rise over the harbour.
The hotel was convenient located on the local highway with a gas station and close to the ferry dock and a hot springs. Westfjords are remote and very quiet - it was very good having the restaurant available for breakfast. Rooms were small but clean and comfortable. I'd recommending bringing ear plugs, as you can hear people in neighboring rooms/hallway, but we did use ear plugs to sleep and had no issue in our two-night stay. The photos posted on the website are accurate.
The natural hot springs pool was lovely and the setting was gorgeous. The staff were helpful, rooms were clean and the breakfast had several good options. I appreciated the lounge where you can read or work on your computer at any hour. The hotel is about a 15-minute drive outside the town of Holmavik (where there are gas, groceries, and restaurants) but I felt this allowed us to really experience the incredible Westfjords setting.
Located in the "downtown" of Isafjördur, Hotel Isafjördur provides a convenient and comfortable space to launch your exploration of this part of the Westfjords. The staff was friendly. The room was comfortable and updated. The breakfast was above average for all the places we had stayed at this point between Reykjavik and the Westfjords. When we next return to the Westfjords, I'd come back here.
Breiðavík
The host was very nice! The little girl that was helping in the hotel did an amazing job serving everyone at dinner. De food was delicious and the bananabread that we bought the next morning was very good! We really loved how chatty and nice the lady was. This was totally worth the money and if i would go to the Westfjords again, we would 100% book this hotel again. :)
Very clean hostel, renovated recently and decorated with taste. The owner is very friendly and even warned us one night that the northern lights were showing, so we quickly jumped into our car and within five minutes we were in pitch black, able to enjoy the show. Very relaxed atmosphere, perfect spot to go visit the east coast of the Westfjords.
The hotel was nicely situated in the Westfjords and had a nice restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner options. We really enjoyed the different pools and hot pots with varying temperatures. They seemed to have several trails to a lake, a waterfall and the property in general is nice to explore. The staff were all friendly and accommodating.
Flateyri
Absolutely stunning location - this little valley may have been our favorite place in what we saw of the Westfjords. The hostel was comfortable, on generations-old family farmland tucked in the mountains, and the host was welcoming and helpful. The maps with attractions were also helpful to get a sense of the area. All we could’ve asked for.
Flateyri
Very charming historical Icelandic house, turned into a guesthouse. Our room was big enough, with a comfortable bed and nice views. Loved the shared dinning area, and the reading room. Good breakfast. The bookstore in the ground floor has plenty of old-style and well chosen products, plus an array of books about Iceland and the Westfjords.
Ísafjörður
Very modern, minimalist and practical apartment near downtown Isafjordur; complete with a washer for clothes, which at this point in the trip was badly needed. This little gem is hidden in one of the urban neighborhoods near the city center where you can shop, eat and sight see one of the most beautiful cities in the Westfjords of Iceland.
Reykhólar
The host was extremely generous and goes above and beyond to make sure you sure you have a great stay in the Westfjords. Extremely knowledgeable about the area and iceland in general. The room was comfortable, the shared spaces were clean and the kitchen was well stocked with everything you'd need to cook a fairly complex meal.
Þingeyri
Location is perfect for exploring the central fingers of the westfjords. The room is an ok size for Scandinavian rooms, and it's great that only 2 rooms shared a toilet and shower. Breakfast was a very nice, though pretty small, buffet with cereals and different Icelandic breads and toppings.
Bolungarvík
Great and spacious flat, perfect for a one-night stop while traveling around the westfjords. While being located on the second floor of 2 stories building, it has its own independent entrance and staircase, which makes it feel very private despite being an apartment.
Hólmavík
We stayed at a well maintained Icelandic house in the middle of a quiet town. This was our stop after Westfjords region. Liked the very comfy beds and the overall authentic look of the place. Kitchen was well-equipped - had all the utensils required to cook a meal.
This hotel was continently located to explore the bird cliffs Latrabjarg and the beautiful beach RaõLysander. The room was comfortable and quiet. The staff were very helpful and friendly. This was a good stopping place for a night as we explored the Westfjords.
excellent, knowledgeable and accomodating staff. Comfortable room. Convenientt location for touring the Westfjords area. Prices are very reasonalbe for iceland! The restaut=rant cooks delicius food, also at reasonable prices.
Patreksfjörður
It was a very comfortable apartment. We loved the big, well-equipped kitchen, the comfy chairs in the bedroom, and the laundry. Excellent wifi. It is a great home base for exploring the southern part of the Westfjords.
Hotel Flatey is the ultimate retreat after exploring Iceland's Westfjords. Authentically restored accommodation, very comfortable and excellent food on a spectacularly beautiful and sublimely tranquil island.
It was in a beautiful area of the Westfjords, although the road to get there was pretty intense - windy dirt/gravel road for over 40 km at the end. We saw 108 sheep and 2 cars on that last stretch.
Birkimelur
A good stop place in Westfjords. The apartment is spacious, with good kitchen device. You can also bought lamb steak, eggs from the host. It's really convenient when I arrive at Sunday evening.
